Net Worth Week 71

Gentle Readers,
It’s been an exciting, but unprofitable week for my business. I was invited to do an interview and to be a panelist. Both will be excellent publicity. I have not previously done either, and will need to prepare. They are both good skills to have, and I must keep developing.
My agency did not tell me that I was eligible for paid vacation based on the type of work I am doing and my longevity on a single job.  Heading to Texas last week was my first paid vacation ever. My agency still has not let me know how much leave I’ve accrued, but I know that I have a minimum of 2 days remaining.
My invisalign has not yet arrived, but my dentist thinks I’ll get them in two more weeks. That will be another cool $2000 to start and the beginning of a different type of pain.
I finished the personal tutoring this week and will restart group classes next week. I also talked with a friend who does the type of work I am skill-building in. She gave me some tips on how to handle the process and let me know what a passing score is.
I will have to write a check to my business this week. It just won’t be able to cover the big August bills otherwise.
On a happy note, I will get to see my girlfriend again two times in September!

How are you growing your skills?

Net Worth Week 65

Gentle Readers,
Work finally took away our OT. Slow and steady must win the race now.  My tutoring begins next week and I’m very excited. I’ll probably have less time for interacting with folks because I need to focus really hard on my lessons to make sure they sink in appropriately. A little focus should go a long way, I think. The plan is to devote most of July to this and then potentially find a gig in it. Such a gig would definitely change my money situation quickly.
I should have noted it before, but I am over halfway done on repaying my Earnest Loan! Huzzah!

Do you still invest in your skill-building?

Net Worth Week 64 – She’s Here Edition!

Gentle Readers,
My room is not yet perfectly organized. (Hint, it never will be.) But I have reduced the amount of stuff through donations, give-aways, and trash where appropriate.  I got it done just in time for my girlfriend to arrive.
My niece is also visiting, but some tomfoolery has prevented me from seeing her until her last day here.
It is still unclear how long my job will last. We had 2.5 days of sitting waiting for work before we were put back on tasks that don’t need to be done. My resume is as current as possible.
It has been an expensive few weeks. This has corresponded with OT being curtailed due to weekend server upgrades. I thought I’d be done with my credit cards before the end of June. I was mistaken.
Thankfully, one of the expenses is for my tutor who I will be starting with very soon. July is going to be an intensely focused month on skill-building. Hopefully, when August roles around, I will find a job in that skill. There was a posting for a similar gig this week, but it is bad form to leave a gig early and I’m not quite prepared.
It’s time to head out the door for breakfast. I hope y’all have wonderful Fourth of July Weekends!

Do you have plans for Independence Day?

Net Worth Week 57 – One is Done Edition!

Gentle Readers,
This week has been a whirlwind. We sat for days at work waiting for our task to be available. Naturally, our supervisor did not communicate with us for two and a half days. So we sat. Thursday morning rolled around and we were told that unlimited OT was being “temporarily” suspended since work was not available. Sensible, but frustrating to my plans. A few hours later, not only do we have work, but we have multiple urgent projects. No word on OT until I had to ask my supervisor if the approval would be back since we have deadlines. This is the uncertainty of my job. We just never know what will happen.
I used my downtime at work to study and it feels like it’s paying off. I’m feeling very hopeful about my ability to get a gig in this new skill soon.
In wonderful news, I paid off the balance transfer ahead of schedule!!! No weird spike in interest rate on that bit of money. I’ve been throwing money at this particular sore-spot for weeks. In mid-April, I still had a balance of over $3000. This is one of the reasons I’ve been working my tail off in overtime. I wanted this gone and now it is!
My remaining credit card debt is $2571. Much better than the almost $6000 it was just a short while ago. I will continue working hard towards demolishing this debt. If my job can keep overtime available, it will be very useful for me. I am traveling next weekend, so my ability to work a ton will be diminished substantially.
This is my fourth week in a row of positive gains. I love that sort of trend!
