Net Worth Week 93

Gentle Readers,
The gig has gone even more ridiculously this week. They let us know on midday Wednesday that for the next three days they’d like us to work even more and that they’ll base their culling decisions on h0w much we work. It’s been exhausting, especially because the systems naturally did not cooperate.
I made it back to the free cabaret and played soccer. My deskmate asked why I was not putting in 15 hour days and then bemoaned that I’m “probably making healthier choices” than them. Yes. Yes, I am.
No advances on the estate paperwork.
I received a present from my girlfriend and her mom. A delicious King Cake. This may signify nothing, or is just a nice thing to do, or maybe I should let hope grow. Outlook unclear. So I’m just going to keep focusing on the things I’m doing to make my life great.
A friend from grad school contacted me at midnight and set me up with tickets to a great networking and learning event. I’ll have to miss four days of work, but, per above, it is not clear that I’ll have the gig by the end of next week anyway. I chose advancing my career. I think it was the right choice.
The numbers look slightly better than they are because my brother has not cashed the check I gave him yet. But I like the trend.

Net Worth Week 92 – Birthday Edition

Gentle Readers,
Progress towards the new good-gig is happening. I got my fingerprints done. My nails looked fabulous, but the tech did not care. Current gig has been a little more in flux than I’d prefer. Lots of sitting around waiting for a task and being sent home early.
I figured out a portion of the problem with not receiving the estate paperwork I’ve requested. Neither the VA nor the medical school who accepted his body has signed the damn death certificate. Both are blaming the other. I’m going to keep calling until I annoy someone into signing this vital record. That does not explain why his life insurance paperwork has not even arrived for me to fill out and submit, but I am trying to focus on one thing at a time as possible.
My efforts to work a ton while also seeing friends is bearing fruit. I attended a free cabaret, I played soccer, I shared food with folks. It has been great for my psyche. I do wonder if I should not up the overtime even further; my roommates’ negligence regarding cleaning and the mouse situation grows more frustrating.
I send my brother the check to repay him! Not having that over my head feels wonderful! I don’t like and am not used to owing individuals money.
It’s my birthday week and letting my friends show up for me while also doing what I like without regard to anyone else’s plan has been nice. There is still bittersweet mixed in with the waiting, but I’m living my life.

Net Worth Week 91 – New Year Edition

Gentle Readers,
I learned on pay day last week that the bonus I earned takes an extra week to pay out. Very strange. There was some progress with the government gig. I’ll be fingerprinted next week. That likely won’t make the progress go faster, but I am glad to see forward motion. It’s good for the heart.
The dog-sitting is at an end for now. Thankfully. I prefer my own bed and access to all of my shoes.  It’s lucrative and gives me a break from my roommates, but definitely has some drawbacks, too. Wearing the same clothes repeatedly, on rotation, gets old. I like my wardrobe.
It’s still really nice to be working again. I know I’ve been at it for a little bit now, but it is so much easier to handle grief and stress when you have something to distract you for part of your days. And I appreciate the impact on my finances, obviously.
Still no life insurance paperwork nor the death certificates I ordered. I’ll have to make some phone calls. But first, I need to do something for a client on Saturday morning before going to my gig. I am working a large amount of overtime right now to try to get myself on more solid footing. Fear not, I am not allowing it to prevent me from seeing friends though. I accept every invite and seek out plans, when possible. This excessive work is short term, and useful, but I do look forward to a more reasonable pace soon.
Thankfully, I got to see a bunch of friends for New Year’s Eve and Day. I got hugs and support and food. And just time and some joy with good people. They encouraged me where I needed it and commiserated where appropriate. I’ve also done a lot of journal writing this week. When I make time for it, I find it to be a very useful activity. The written word can sometimes reveal more of the heart than long talks with people you love. Regardless of the outcome my girlfriend and I decide upon, we both have some important growth to do. For ourselves. Maybe together.

What sort of side-hustle do you engage in that tricks you into forgetting  how annoying it can be? Putting my life on a dog’s schedule is not pleasant. Other people’s homes can have weird sounds at night.

Net Worth Week 90 – End of the Year Edition

Gentle Readers,
I completed the first things my new client needs while also working enough overtime to get the first-level bonus. I’m a reasonable woman and did not attempt the second-level bonus because I need to sleep and feel human every day. I also gave my business another small loan. Please let it be the last.
The interview for the other government gig went really well, and I absolutely want the woman who interviewed me to be my supervisor. This will take some time because the clearance I have is not accepted by her agency.  She estimated it would take 6-8 weeks for them to process it. I emailed the forms on Thursday, so mid-February at the earliest.
In the meantime, it appears the high OT gig I’m on will continue. I confirmed with my brother who says that the plane tickets were $600. After a few weeks in this gig to replenish my accounts, I’ll get that money to him.
I received my “last” sets of trays for Invisalign. My regular dentist was on vacation, so I won’t know if she thinks I need a “correction” after these are done. I do know that I will need to shell out nearly $1000 for a new retainer/nightguard once this process is complete. My mouth and jaw have changed a ton, and I need to keep all the work in place. It has not stopped being strange to see my changed smile. I do look forward to being able to snack or eat without immediately flossing and brushing. My vanity and debt have stopped me from taking new passport photos. I’m hoping that I don’t need a correction and can take the photos/apply for a passport in the next 2 months. I need to fly overseas to meet my new family member.
Still no life insurance paperwork, if it does not arrive by the time I’m done dog-sitting, I’ll have to make some phone calls.
Christmas Eve with my favorite family definitely warmed my heart. Christmas dinner ended up just being my friend and her girlfriend because her niece was sick. Still delightful. Watching their love and comfort together deepen is heart-warming.

Net Worth Week 89 – A LOT of Work Edition

Gentle Readers,
These past few weeks have been a challenge. Now I’m on to a new type of challenge. I started a high overtime gig and was finally hired by a client for my business. That client, naturally has an immediate emergency order for me to fulfill. This is the first client emergency I’ve had to handle. I learned a lot in the process. Hopefully that will make me a better businesswoman. I also reached out to my mentors for feedback and direction. Vital. It’s very possible that this client may have continuing work for me, if they like me.
But I am earning money again, while waiting for the good government gig to start. It also has overtime, but does not market itself as 40 hours of OT a week for four months. So I am grateful. The vicissitudes of gig-life mean that I have another interview for this gig, but with a different section of the government. This agency is trying to secure me work that would not be impacted by any government shut down.
I still have not received the paperwork I’m expecting for my dad’s estate. I know it’s the holidays, but they told me 3-4 weeks. I’d like to fill it out and get my siblings their life insurance payment. I know that the estate part will still take some time, but it appears that his debts and assets matched up fairly closely. That is less urgent. I also would like the life insurance for me. I have plans for debt reduction and asset purchasing. It would also just feel different to have all of that money in my bank account for a little bit. With the financial uncertainty of this year, it will be nice to get the unexpected influx.
Soccer is on hold for two weeks due to the holidays and I’m trying to stay fit enough with some simple body-weight exercises at home. I have a hard time sticking to this with everything going on. But some planks and stretching do a lot.
I was able to do a few small holiday things, which was nice. I really do like greenery and festive people. I’m so grateful that my friend invited me to her home for Christmas. It’s her first time hosting and I love her and her sister and her sister’s kids.  It’ll correspond with the start of my dog-sitting, but hopefully that just means it will be easier to get out to her.
Yes, I will have a Rover client, a fast-turn around client and a new high overtime gig all at the same time. November and December should have balanced themselves better. But, I am finding that I’ve got the energy to do this all. It is weird, but the energy is there.

Net Worth Week 88 – A Bit of Work

Gentle Readers,
I’ve worked half a week! It’s been nice to use my brain. It seems like the gig will end very early this morning so I am trying to get in to get what few hours may be available.
Everything else is just the same. Waiting on paperwork for my dad’s estate. Running around to play soccer. Waiting for the government to start the well-paying gig. Hoping that I have enough to get by until that happens. I did get to re-schedule my physical that I had to miss when I was out of state for my dad, and am happy to report that all of my vitals are good. And, my doctor does not think we need to consider me as higher risk for cancer even though he is immediate family; his cancer mainly impacts men and those with very different lifestyles from mine.
I did significant things to improve my business this week and will likely sign a new client this weekend. That’s a relief! I still think I’ll have to give my business another loan, but it can be smaller.
Unsurprisingly, my mental health is definitely improved by having work to do. A little less money stress. An enforced early wake-up time. Less time to hyper-focus on my feelings that shift rapidly still. As I write this, I’m frustrated and angry with my girlfriend. Two days ago, I had a hard time resisting contacting her to tell her how wonderful my day was. These phases are natural. Whether we stay together or break up, they all make sense. All of the emotions are valid. The things I’m angry about I was upset about throughout our relationship. My wanting to share joy with her is the same. All of this can change, but for now, I just have to accept that my emotions are going to stay in a flux position for awhile.
I’m now more than halfway done with Invisalign. After that first week, I’m really glad I stuck with it. Significant pain reduction. I’m looking forward to eating whatever I want again, as well.

Do you think the federal government will shut down or that I will start the good gig before Christmas?

Net Worth Week 87 – Desiring Work Edition

Gentle Readers,
Another week without work. The second interview went very well. All of the individuals I met with were impressed by me. But the federal government moves slowly. There was a 2 week continuing resolution passed yesterday, which means that the federal government at least won’t shut down in the next two weeks. Hopefully that means I’ll be employed soon.
Thankfully, my office got a lot minute request for a meeting that I could charge for. It was a small amount, but it will help.
I finally got paid through Rover. Rover’s processes are very slow.  I met with the two potential long-sits for later in the month. One hired me and the other decided that they needed a sitter who could also do the afternoon walk.
I signed up for and played in my first soccer game in over 3 years. I haven’t had time since I began my business. There were some SNAFUs, but I got to run around and be a member of a team. It was great.

Do you think the federal government will shut down?

Net Worth Week 86 – Biding Time Edition

Gentle Readers,
I’m still in the hurry up and wait phase of estate management and pursuit of a gig. My second-phase interview was rescheduled for Monday instead of yesterday. These interviews in my employment world are largely ceremonial. Once they approve me, they’ll need to formally request me and send me to get an ID. Since this is a government gig through a temp agency and a subcontractor, it takes time to onboard. Last time, it took a month from first contact to working. Thankfully I had a gig during that time to hold me over then. My first contact regarding this gig was November 6th; Monday would be 4 weeks since then.  In the meantime, I am studying like a mad woman to make myself available for other types of gigs.
I’ve also used this time to do some administrative work for my own office and bedroom. Handling tasks that take time but little brainpower. I’ve kept my brainpower for my heart and reading novels. This was a wise choice.
My friends have been really wonderful. Lots of phone calls and time in person. People are wrapping me up in love and it’s great. Even so, it feels like November has been the longest month. So much has changed. So much has happened. Hopefully working again will make time feel a bit more normal soon.
I have my first Rover gig tonight and I am excited. Especially since I did not originally realize that I get paid per animal. I’m earning double what I thought this weekend. The dogs are high energy, and that is fine with me. I get a chance to stay away from my roommates and play with animals while earning money. Wins all around. Hopefully this client and I get along enough to make this an ongoing gig.

Net Worth Week 85 – Thanksgiving Edition

Gentle Readers,
I have not yet been formally offered a gig. That means I earned no money this week. That’s frustrating, but it acted as a form of bereavement leave.  It also gave me time to be on the phone figuring out estate management. I began much of the estate process. I am still unsure of a few things, but I’ve made big strides. This is mainly because he had little and I had the time beforehand to get an idea of where he had accounts.
Unfortunately, Earnest did not allow a month-long break on paying. Apparently that is only for people who have their student loans through them. The only option for a break is a 3 month break. I hope that won’t be necessary.
I changed some accounts around. The health account was subsumed into the EF. I now have a line-item for the plane tickets I need to repay my brother for. He hasn’t told me the particular amount, but he will eventually. We’ve agreed that I will repay it when it won’t hurt me financially. That is, after I have a gig for a few weeks. Or when the life insurance pays out.
I got to spend Thanksgiving with one of my favorite families. The food and friendship were restorative. I got to hear stories from her children. I got to have a glass of very fancy whisky to celebrate her husband’s promotion.  It was lovely.

Net Worth Week 84 – Hard Week Edition

Gentle Readers,
My gig ended last Monday, but I have an interview to do similar temporary work as a supervisor. I hope that this works out. I will likely have at least two weeks without earning money.
My brother’s high-risk pregnancy ended with an apparently healthy child. They live overseas, and their country has some strict rules for fathers in hospitals. He had very little time with his child at first. Gratefully, his wife is being released today. Their child needs a little more monitoring, but things appear okay. That brother’s biopsy results indicate that he does not actually have cancer and he should be able to avoid the cancer that impacted our father by lifestyle changes.
Our father passed away a few hours after his most recent grandchild was born. Most of his children were en route, but did not make it in time for a final goodbye. One of his children had not been able to visit him during this illness at all. Another only saw him in his final hours – after he’d already lost the ability to communicate. I have many thoughts about this, but for now, I need to begin managing his estate and that involves many phone calls and figuring out what all needs to be managed.
I had to cancel my physical because I was near my dad, but I will reschedule. I also need to request a month-long break on Earnest.
