Net Worth Week 84 – Hard Week Edition

Gentle Readers,
My gig ended last Monday, but I have an interview to do similar temporary work as a supervisor. I hope that this works out. I will likely have at least two weeks without earning money.
My brother’s high-risk pregnancy ended with an apparently healthy child. They live overseas, and their country has some strict rules for fathers in hospitals. He had very little time with his child at first. Gratefully, his wife is being released today. Their child needs a little more monitoring, but things appear okay. That brother’s biopsy results indicate that he does not actually have cancer and he should be able to avoid the cancer that impacted our father by lifestyle changes.
Our father passed away a few hours after his most recent grandchild was born. Most of his children were en route, but did not make it in time for a final goodbye. One of his children had not been able to visit him during this illness at all. Another only saw him in his final hours – after he’d already lost the ability to communicate. I have many thoughts about this, but for now, I need to begin managing his estate and that involves many phone calls and figuring out what all needs to be managed.
I had to cancel my physical because I was near my dad, but I will reschedule. I also need to request a month-long break on Earnest.

I am so happy to hear all the good news about your brother. But I am so sorry about your father. I know we’re just internet friends, but if there is anything at all you need, even just to talk, I hope you know I’m here. Thinking of you and yours.❤

    • Thank you for that. The happy news is helping a ton.

    • Thank you so much. His happy news is really helping. I appreciate all the support my internet friends are providing. So much.

I am so happy to hear about your brother! Congratulations on your new niece/nephew (is there a gender neutral term for this in English?)

I managed my mom’s estate but since it wasn’t much and I was the beneficiary on everything there wasn’t a lot to do. I do suggest getting at least 10, if not more, original copies of the death certificate. You will need an original one for each entity you deal with-most won’t accept photocopies. Do you have access to an EAP to maybe talk to a lawyer? I wouldn’t necessarily suggest paying to talk to one, but if there was a way to get an free hour long consult I would definitely take it.

The hospital my mom died in tried to get me to pay the $130k+ bill and aggressively called several times. I was a student so I could go to the student legal center to ask for advice, but know that those trying to collect money from your dad’s estate aren’t necessarily entitled to it and don’t have your interests in mind.

Thanks for the heads up on multiple copies of the death certificate. I used your advice and asked everyone I spoke with today if they needed an original.

That hospital was terrible to you. The estate and not the heirs pays out what it can. The kind lady I talked to at his one credit card company brought it up on her own that I am not responsible for any necessary payments personally.
